The DC dielectric strength test is carried out when there are very significant capacitive currents, since if there is direct current, the capacitive current component is eliminated. The advantage of the DC test is to read the leakage current component.

DC Dielectric Strength Test - execution
The test is carried out between the live and earthed parts and between windings, when these are segregated from each other. For a test time established by the compliance regulations, the insulation is subjected to a direct voltage of a value equal to the peak voltage of the prescribed alternating test voltage.
The dielectric then undergoes a polarization, and its atoms deform: if the voltage increases, their deformation becomes greater and greater until it is sufficient to break the strong nucleus-electron atomic bonds. Therefore, the insulation becomes a conductor and is crossed by an electric discharge (partial discharge).
The objective of this test is to verify compliance of this limit and, by extension, of the current value measured with the parameter that can be set in the machine software.
During the DC dielectric strength test, no insulation failure should occur.
A failure is considered to have occurred when the current circulating due to the application of the test voltage rapidly increases in an uncontrolled manner, as the insulation of the DUT under test no longer prevents the circulation of the current.
